Maybe your outdoor table has an opening in the center that you can pace an umbrella and it will cover the table, giving you shade when you are sitting outside in the sunlight. While these usually don’t come with the table you will be able to add it. With the umbrella there is usually an umbrella stand that sits on the ground and all you have to do is to insert the umbrella in the stand then open it. You don’t have to move it once you added it, simply closing the umbrella when it’s not needed is all you have to do.

What size of umbrella should you get?

You will want an umbrella that will shade the whole table. So from the center of the table, measure to the end of the table, then adds about 4 feet to it, so that it will cover the whole table and seating area. You will want to make sure that the seating area is shaded when the umbrella is opened so always take that into consideration when measuring it.

Wood or Metal Frame?

Here is a choice that you will want to make. This will mainly depend on what your patio furniture is made out of. If you have wood furniture, then you will want to get wood umbrella frames.

With the metal frames, you will be able to get push button tilts, and maybe a push button to open and close it. With the wood, it’s usually opened manually.

Make sure that you patio umbrella tilts so that you can move it when the sun moves. You may have several different options with the tilting so that the sun is always blocked.

Umbrella Material

When looking for umbrellas you will want to check out the fabric that your umbrella is made out of. You will want to purchase durable material such as canvas to last the longest. You can also spray fabric protection on the top of the umbrella where it will last longer, and it will add protection from the harmful sunrays, keeping it from fading. Products such as Scotchgard are great for this purpose.  The material that you choose should also protect you from the UV rays from the sun. Some fabric will allow the rays to go through the fabric. Make sure that your protected from the sun with the fabric you choose.

Does the Patio Umbrella always have to be around a table?

No it doesn’t. You can set up an umbrella anywhere on your patio. The free stands will allow you to set it up and add chairs around it. You can have more than one umbrella if you wish in your backyard.

No matter which style you choose, or which design on the fabric or canvas, your main objection with the patio umbrella is to give you shade. Make sure that it’s big enough to give you the desired shaded area before purchasing. Take your measurements to the store if you are unsure and they will help you decide which size patio umbrella you will want for your patio or deck.
